Pasta Dinners and Priesthood Vocations

News and Events > Pasta Dinners 2009

What?

Many dioceses have found it beneficial to their priesthood vocation program to hold “pasta dinners.”  In this program, gifted and faithful men come together, along with their pastor and diocesan bishop, to pray, eat and converse about priesthood.  Many seminarians from other dioceses have noted that attending a pasta dinner in their diocese was an important event in the process of deciding to apply for priesthood.

In the Diocese of Albany, the Vocation Office and Bishop Hubbard, will host five pasta dinners between May 2009 and November 2009.  Priests of the diocese are asked to invite single men from their parish (or ministry) who have the gifts to be good priests someday.  The inviting priest attends the dinner with the candidate; this reduces the reluctance that a candidate might experience from not knowing anyone at the dinner.  It would be normal for each candidate to attend only one of the dinners; the priest could attend more than one dinner with other candidates.  During dinner, the priests in attendance share their story of how they came to believe that God was calling them to be a priest (usually about 5 minutes in length).  There’s not a problem for priests who would prefer not to share their story.
Following dinner, Bishop Hubbard will address the candidates.  Evening prayer will follow the Bishop’s talk.  Some articles and a list of upcoming events will be distributed following evening prayer.

When/Where?

Dinner will be served at 6pm.  The evening will end by 8pm.  The dates and places of the pasta dinners are as follows.

Friday, May 22nd - Immaculate Conception, Glenville
Monday, June 8th - St Francis de Sales, Herkimer
Wednesday, July 29th - St. Michael's, South Glens Falls
Tuesday, October 20th - St. Augustine's, Troy

Who?

Single men, ages 16-55 who are gifted (e.g. faithful, generous of heart, service oriented, active in parish life, have an ability to learn, etc.) and possibly open to priesthood in the future.  In a special way, please consider any possible “second-career” vocations (ages 28-55) in your midst…we need to identify and invite more of these men.
